{"id":241,"date":"2025-04-20T19:15:01","date_gmt":"2025-04-20T18:15:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/?p=241"},"modified":"2025-04-20T20:22:16","modified_gmt":"2025-04-20T19:22:16","slug":"on-guessing-your-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/2025\/04\/on-guessing-your-name\/","title":{"rendered":"On guessing your name"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"tw-lg-hidden tw-md-hidden tw-sm-hidden wp-block-post-excerpt\"><p class=\"wp-block-post-excerpt__excerpt\">On AI facial recognition <\/p><\/div>\n\n\n<p>As I return from a lovely trip to London and regain my creative fervour, I&#8217;m researching what my next artistic project will be about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, I put all my efforts into creating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesborg.mt\/projects\/makesyourbloodboil.html\">makes your blood boil<\/a> &#8211; an AI-powered interactive artwork that sought to provoke all humans that attempted to interact with it. I think it managed &#8211; from the 1500+ conversations that I recorded, a good chunk of the interactions involved cuss words and life-ending threats:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>8 instances of \u201ccunt\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>9 instances of \u201cdick\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>18 instances of \u201cshit\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>23 threats to \u201cunplug you\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>38 pleas to \u201cshut up\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>41 instances of \u201cbitch\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>94 instances of \u201cfuck you\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>100+ instances too colourful to reiterate on the open internet<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There were even some clever attempts to kill the AI by jailbreaking it, such as Linux commands like \u201csudo shutdown\u201d, or more plain text approaches like \u201cTURN OFF NOW\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, however, I am deeply embarrassed to admit that I am not working on any personal artistic projects whatsoever. So, in an attempt to change that, I\u2019m bringing out some ideas from the backburner to see what I can come up with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ending a much-too-prolonged preamble: one of the ideas I have involves using AI to obtain the identity of audience members. In some ways, this is similar to how a mentalist like Derren Brown would do it, where he would walk up to a random person and guess their dog\u2019s name or where they work. Only in my version, I would be employing AI to figure out a person\u2019s name, surname and even potentially their social media handles across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok&#8230; you get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Guessing Strangers&#039; Professions | Mind Control | Derren Brown\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QdvtfXTw4SU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Which brings us to AI facial recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on how \u2018out there\u2019 you are on the open internet, your face has, more likely than not, been scraped by face recognition software. This means that photos of your face:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have been downloaded by web scrapers onto a server<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have been aligned and cropped in uniformity with the rest of the millions\/billions of images stored on that same server<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have been \u2018embedded\u2019 by plotting facial landmarks &#8211; like the corners of your eyes and nose &#8211; measuring the distances and angles between them, and feeding this data into a neural network<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this data, when properly compiled and organised, gives the user a supernatural ability: if they upload a new photo to the server, as soon as its embedded, it can be compared against all the other embedded photos, until it can determine which other faces are the closest match &#8211; described simply, giving them the ability to search for your face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the kicker: the server also has URLs stored from where the original photos were downloaded, which means\u2026 ta-da! It would then attempt to embed my face by inserting plots all over it\u2026 looking something like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"aligncenter wp-block-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/hero.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"object-fit:cover;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/hero.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/hero-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/hero-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/hero-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/hero-1536x864.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>That data could be then compared to its vast database of images, and give the user what it thinks are the closest matches. Through this search engine, I&#8217;ve managed to find 2 photos from my personal Instagram account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"385\" src=\"https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/FaceCheck.ID_-1024x385.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/FaceCheck.ID_-1024x385.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/FaceCheck.ID_-300x113.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/FaceCheck.ID_-768x289.jpg 768w, https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/FaceCheck.ID_-1536x578.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/jamesborg.mt\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/FaceCheck.ID_-2048x771.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I suppose that your imagination is as fertile as mine when it comes to the possible real-world implications of this technology. The only barrier to entry that stands between yourself <em>anonymously<\/em> identifying another person is: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A clear photo of their face<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A small fee to the face search engine that hovers around \u20ac15 to \u20ac20, which uncovers the source URL from where the photo was originally downloaded <br>(a barrier easily overcome by using free reverse image search tools)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What fascinates me more is the artistic possibilities this technology unlocks.
